When you’re looking for a mid-range laptop, you probably don’t think of one that feels exceptionally well built. However, HP delivers just that with the HP Pavilion 14-dv0622sa. Not only does it look amazing but it also has the feel of a high-end product.

When reviewing this laptop, I expected mediocrity and boredom. This is because it is a semi-budget laptop. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was I taken aback but I was also a little ecstatic.

Everything You Need to Know About This Versatile Laptop

HP’s Pavilion laptops aren’t the cheapest on the market. This is because the HP brand is known for very high-quality laptops. Luckily, the Pavilion line includes the most affordable HP machines anyone can buy if they are on a budget.

• The Laptop’s Design

The HP Pavilion 14-dv0622sa has a nice design. Although it has mid-range pricing, the polished silver aluminium chassis offers great elegance. It’s polished enough for the office, but not as chunky as some professional laptops.

Therefore, the Pavilion 14 looks like the real deal if you’re looking for a machine that can be used for both personal and professional purposes. More importantly, it is easy to carry around. While lighter laptops exist, the HP Pavilion 14-dv0622sa is a featherweight at 1.46kg.

In addition, it is compact and can fit in small spaces. If you need to dash to the pantry or you have a meeting in a small office, you can hold it with one hand. Moreover, if you have to go somewhere on a train, it’ll also fit nicely on your lap.

• Smaller Keyboard

This laptop comes with a space-saving keyboard which eliminates the number pad. As a result, the overall footprint on your desk or lap is lower. The laptop’s compact profile keeps it at less than an inch when closed.

In addition, it is very easy to slip it into a bag. However, if you specifically need a laptop with a number pad, the bigger Pavilion 15 computers are close alternatives.

• Has a Fingerprint Scanner

Unfortunately, the Pavilion 14 lacks a Kensington lock port making it unsuitable for those searching for a dedicated business laptop. However, the device’s fingerprint reader further solidifies it as a viable alternative for work-from-home or hybrid home-office scenarios.

I found the fingerprint reader to be dependable almost every time. Although I had to sometimes reposition my finger for better reading, I have never been locked out for trying too many times.

• Connectivity & Ports

Pavilion 14 has several connectors and ports. First, it comes with two USB 3.0 ports and a USB-C port with a power supply. Secondly, it has 10GBps transfer speeds and a display port with 1.4 connections.

This gives you the option of connecting numerous monitors whenever you need to. An HDMI 2.0 connection is also included for a typical display connection. That said, whatever display is needed to carry out your tasks, the Pavilion 14 is unquestionably adaptable.

The machine also comes with a micro SD card port, a 3.5mm headset-speaker combo, and Bluetooth 5 connectivity. Lastly, the power supply is a separate barrel connector, although it may also be charged via USB-C.

• Speakers and Screen

The Pavilion 14 has a 14-inch anti-glare IPS large screen with Full-HD resolution. It looks conspicuously plastic thanks to the dark bezels. Luckily, they’re moderately sized. It also features a 720p webcam with embedded dual array mics at the top.

Maximum brightness of 238nits is also achieved by the display even though HP has indicated 250nits on the packaging. To come up with ways of lowering costs when things are tight, some cheaper computers only go up to 200nits. Therefore, this pavilion model is right on track.

Simply put, the Pavilion 14 has satisfactory features. However, if you would like to work outdoors, you’ll need a computer with better display features. Luckily, you will not have any problems operating it indoors or in the evening.

• The Picture Quality

The picture quality of this laptop isn’t great, but it’s good enough for everyday video calls. If you’re beginning a YouTube or any live stream channel, you’d be better off using an additional camera instead. While the contrast is high and the colours might be vibrant, the definition is lacking. Films tend to be boring, making this laptop less suitable for streaming movies.

• It is Non-convertible

The hinge of the laptop allows you to push the display back to a comfortable position. This is unlike other 2-in-1s on the market like HP’s own x360 alternatives.

However, it does not fold backwards, so you can’t use it as a tablet. There’s also the annoyance of accidentally clicking on anything while trying to wipe dirt off the screen.

• Comes with a Touchscreen

Even though it is non-convertible, it has a touchscreen which eliminates the need for a trackpad or additional mouse. This is for people who suffer from chronic strain. Remember, it is rare to find a laptop with a touch-screen at this pricing point.

That said, if you don’t have a lot to spend and want a multi-purpose laptop, the HP Pavilion 14-dv0622sa leaves nothing to be desired. This is especially if you limit your live streams to the TV. Alternatively, if you don’t mind paying an extra €200 or more on a laptop that can handle everything, HP has other choices that will suit you best.

• Trackpad and Keyboard

Earlier, I indicated that there isn’t a numbers pad, but that is never an issue in most cases. I like a numeric keypad, but I didn’t miss it on the Pavilion 14. However, as a writer, my need for a numeric pad isn’t as critical as it is in certain other occupations.

For example, accountants may wish to seek other models which include a numbers pad. Overall, the keyboard is pleasant, and there is plenty of room to breathe between the keys notwithstanding the tiny layout. The keys, like the display, are clear plastic, which stands out against the aluminium frame.

While the keys have a short profile and little travel, they are bouncy to the touch, requiring a bit more effort to type. Luckily, this doesn’t need much time to get used to, and some people find the mechanical response pleasurable.

This laptop’s trackpad is adequately large, easy to operate, and has excellent palm resistance. It recognizes both physical and gesture-based clicks, such as two-finger swiping and right-clicking. There are no issues here.

Final Verdict

The HP Pavilion 14-dv0622sa is a reliable, cheap laptop that can manage most tasks at home or your place of work. Video calls, web surfing, social networking sites, streaming music, and basic photo editing are all possible. Its sole flaw is that the screen may be too dark for some users, and the touch-screen isn’t necessary.

Despite this, the gadget is portable and tiny, making it suitable for those who work from home. What’s more, you can connect the computer to one or more displays thanks to HDMI and Display-port 1.4 compatibility. Lastly, the fingerprint scanner offers you extra protection and privacy.
